Authorities have finally revealed information about the Midtown Manhattan shooting where Shane Devon Tamura, a former high school football star, who shot 5 people and killed 4 of them at the building where the NFL offices are. Christopher Raia, the agency’s assistant director in charge of the New York Field Office, said at a news conference, “While this remains an NYPD investigation, the FBI New York office stands ready to provide any and all resources to our system to assist our partners”.

“Initial checks of our internal systems have not revealed any information about the subject, but when and if more information becomes available, we will share what we can, when we can,” he added. FBI agents were immediately deployed into the scene where the shootings occurred. Investigators continue to probe whether the attack at the high-rise housing NFL headquarters was tied to Tamura’s athletic past.

Tamura’s football legacy and clouded dreams

According to reports, Tamura was a standout running back at Golden Valley and Granada Hills in California, earning regional recognition for his rushing and return stats during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. As a junior varsity player at Golden Valley, he logged over 1,300 all-purpose yards and 11 touchdowns.

At Granada Hills, he maintained a solid average of nearly 5 yards per carry and excelled on special teams. Despite this early promise, Tamura never advanced to college football or the NFL, a failure that some suggest fueled lingering resentment.

Possible NFL connection in investigation

The building targeted in the attack at 345 Park Avenue houses major tenants including the NFL headquarters, Blackstone, and KPMG. Although investigators have not confirmed his intended target, speculation has swirled online that Tamura may have targeted the NFL offices due to unresolved anger over his failed football aspirations. Some on social media noted that he “was a stand out RB that graduated in 2016”, equating the venue with a possible manifestation of his personal grievance toward the NFL.

NYPD and the FBI continue probing his digital footprint and reviewing surveillance footage to clarify if the choice of building was deliberate and tied to his sports past. While no official link has been confirmed, the focus on his football background has itensified scrutiny of the location and potential motive.
