Did Paige Bueckers’ injury setback pave the way for Caitlin Clark’s rise? Dwyane Wade thinks so

In a recent episode of his podcast, The Timeout, NBA legend Dwyane Wade offered a candid perspective on the trajectories of two of women’s basketball’s brightest stars: Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark.

Wade acknowledged Bueckers‘ immense talent and potential but suggested that her college career was hindered by significant injuries, which, in turn, provided Clark with an opportunity to shine on a national stage.

“To me, I was looking at, I’m like, ‘Oh, I think Paige Bueckers is going to be, you know, one of those goats, right?’ And then Paige suffered, you know, the ACL injuries in college. Opened up that window for Caitlin Clark,” Wade remarked.

He emphasized that while Clark was always a top-tier player, the spotlight she received during Bueckers’ absence accelerated her rise in the sport.

Clark seizes the moment

This period of Clark‘s career saw her stepping into the spotlight, leading to her selection as the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Her subsequent performances have solidified her status as a leading figure in the league.

Bueckers, on the other hand, began her college career at UConn with high expectations, but faced multiple setbacks due to knee injuries, including a torn ACL that sidelined her during the 2022-23 college season.

These challenges sidelined her during pivotal moments, allowing Clark, who was already a formidable presence at Iowa, to capture the public’s attention and solidify her status as a generational talent.

Despite the adversities, Bueckers made a remarkable comeback. In her final college season, she led UConn to a national championship, showcasing her resilience and skill.

Her performance not only silenced critics but also reaffirmed her position among the elite players in women’s basketball.

Wade, a three-time NBA champion and current co-owner of the Chicago Sky, has been an ardent supporter of the WNBA and its players.

He has consistently praised Bueckers‘ determination and potential, even likening her to the legendary Diana Taurasi. “Kenny and I were talking the other day, and I was just, you know, Paige Bueckers has been one of my favorite players,” Wade shared. “Shout out to Paige Bueckers. She’s having an incredible rookie season.”

As Bueckers embarks on her professional journey with the Dallas Wings, the basketball community watches closely.

Wade concluded by emphasizing the significance of having multiple stars in the league. “Instead of having one star, now you’re able to have two stars, and they’re both different,” he stated. “They’re not the same star.” This diversity enriches the league, offering fans a variety of playing styles and personalities to support.
