Did Andy Reid make a $31.5M mistake and trust Patrick Mahomes to sort it all out?

The Kansas City Chiefs are under the microscope after a rollercoaster offseason, and one NFL exec isn’t holding back on their moves. After a brutal 40-22 Super Bowl LIX loss to the Eagles, the Chiefs admitted they’d “miscalculated” Mahomes’ protection, leaving their star QB scrambling more than they’d like.

They swung big in free agency, snagging offensive lineman Jaylon Moore on a two-year, $30M deal to shore up the line. But letting safety Justin Reid jet to the Saints for a three-year, $31.5M contract? That’s got tongues wagging, and not all of it’s praise.

“An underrated enforcer,” the exec called Justin Reid, tossing shade at Andy Reid‘s crew for waving goodbye to a two-time Super Bowl champ who’d been a defensive rock since 2022. The Chiefs’ plan? Lean harder on Mahomes’ magic and patch the O-line after trading Joe Thuney to the Bears.

Moore’s a solid pickup-started 17 games for the 49ers last year, but fans are skeptical. “They’re asking Mahomes to carry too much again,” one posted, echoing the exec’s gripe that Kansas City’s banking on their QB to outshine roster gaps.

NFL Exec calls out Chiefs: Too much on Mahomes, too little on D

Andy Reid’s not sweating it. At the NFL Annual Meeting in March, he shrugged: “We’ve got Patrick, we’ll figure it out.” But that $31.5M decision to let Reid walk stings when you peek at the secondary-Nazeeh Johnson’s back, sure, but losing a vet like Justin’s got folks nervous, especially after his 83 tackles in ’24.

The exec didn’t mince words: “Did they miscalculate again?” It’s a fair jab: Mahomes took a beating in that Super Bowl, sacked four times, and the Chiefs’ D couldn’t stop Philly’s 464-yard onslaught.

Mahomes, ever the cool cat, restructured his $450M deal in March, freeing up nearly $50M in cap space, plenty to splash on Moore and corner Kristian Fulton. “I just want to win,” he said on The Pat McAfee Show in February, brushing off the pressure.

Some fans cheer: “Mahomes can handle anything!” while others side with the exec, wondering if Reid’s crew overplayed their hand. With Moore’s durability in question and Justin Reid now anchoring New Orleans, the Chiefs’ offseason chess moves are under fire.
