Devin Williams’ signing with the Mets raises a question: Where will Edwin Diaz play?

The New York Mets have shaken up the relief pitching market by securing the services of Devin Williams on a three-year deal worth more than $50 million. This ambitious move, driven by owner Steve Cohen, seeks to transform the team’s bullpen, which was a notable weakness last season.

However, the arrival of Williams has prompted immediate speculation about the future of their current star closer, Puerto Rican Edwin Diaz, generating a new question mark in the busy transfer market.

What will happen to Edwin Diaz’s future?

Traditionally, such a hefty contract for a closer would indicate the imminent departure of Diaz, who is expected to land an even more lucrative deal in free agency.

Initially, many experts assumed that this signing left Diaz served on a silver platter for contending teams in dire need of bullpen help, particularly pointing to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays as frontrunners.

However, recent reports have added a layer of complexity to the narrative. Despite the heavy investment in Williams, the Mets are still interested in having Diaz return to Queens.

Edwin Diaz is loved by MLB teams

Edwin Diaz, who posted a 1.63 ERA with 28 saves last season, has been thinking about his future and although it is not yet known what will happen, the player is grateful to the Mets and is very fond of them.

“I like the team. I like the organization. They came with the best deal for me three years ago, and I really enjoyed staying with them. But at the end of the day, I don’t know what they’re thinking,” Diaz said a few weeks ago at the MLB awards.

“I would love to stay in New York. But if I have to go somewhere else, I would be happy and want to win a ring. Wherever I go, I want to win a ring and enjoy the time,” Diaz added last month, making it clear that wherever he goes, he will be looking to be the best.
