Devin Williams says goodbye to Yankees in Juan Soto style with attack on fans after signing with Mets

What starts badly, ends badly. When Devin Williams arrived at the Yankees from the Brewers, his performances and numbers were not what was expected of him. He disappointed almost immediately. That feeling grew among the fans after the pitcher left for the Mets. In response, the player threw a dig at them on social media.

When it was revealed that he was leaving Milwaukee to join the New York team, expectations for him were very high. In his first few games, the excitement surrounding his arm began to fade away. Little or nothing was seen of the man who was twice voted the National League Reliever of the Year. In his first 12 appearances, he posted a 9.00 ERA, a poor figure compared to what was expected.

He was later removed from the closer’s role. He received save opportunities, but failed to deliver; David Bednar took over in the ninth inning down the stretch. He finished the season with the worst ERA of his career, 4.79.

During the offseason, there were Yankees fans who called on the organization to sign a good closer and begged for Williams to leave the team, because he was not delivering results. Their wishes were heard; the pitcher was traded to the Mets on a three-year, $51 million contract.

As soon as the move was made official, Williams changed his image on his Instagram account to assume himself as a Mets player immediately. He took the opportunity to post a story with a message dedicated to his critics and detractors.

For a bunch of people that didn’t want me back on their team, they’re sure upset in the DMs

Devin Williams has a different opinion

Contrary to what Yankees fans saw and think, the pitcher values the 2025 season as a positive one. He admits that he had some not-so-pleasant moments, but they were the least compared to the bad perception that exists about his performance on the diamond.

I think overall (my campaign) was pretty good, to be honest. At the end of the day, I think it was in line with what I’ve done in the past, barring a few disastrous games. I feel like I contributed

Juan Soto style

Both in his indirectness and in his appreciation of things, Williams is reminiscent of the episode of controversy with Soto when he was traded to the Mets. In the first instance, the Dominican outfielder said he was very comfortable with the Yankees, that he felt the franchise was like a family. It was an indirect way for him to be offered a better contract to return to the team. Yankees did not offer and he went with the city rival.

Installed with the Mets, Soto changed his mind and declared that the orange organization was the best in New York. His statements were not well received by the Yankees fans, who booed him to make him feel their disapproval.
