With an earned run average of 12.00 in his season opener, Devin Williams is not having a good time, and for that reason he felt the need to confess how he has felt so far and how much the New York Yankees should worry about his results on the mound at this early stage of the campaign.
“I haven’t been 100%”
The star closer of the Bronx Bombers is not having things go as planned. In four appearances, he has four walks and five strikeouts, something that the fans are very much in disagreement with and do not know how far this debacle could go.
“I haven’t felt 100 percent until now, but I would say I’m getting closer,” Williams told the New York Post amid criticism of his performance, which even intensified after the last game against the Detroit Tigers, where he arrived with a comfortable 4-0 lead and suddenly left the score at 4-3
Although things may be bad, they are not so terrible for the Yankees because Devin is healthy, he has no injury that would impair his work on the mound, so his bad start may be momentary and just a matter of work.
Reasons, not excuses
The truth is that the pitcher is coming off a back injury and paternity leave, so he may be in the process of getting back into his rhythm without falling into early desperation over his slump. And while he knows that the pressure in the organization is very high, it may just be time to reverse the conditions.
“I’m sure this will be a distant memory. It’s not that far away… just a little bit better at throwing strikes. The repertoire is not that far away. He’ll be fine,” said Aaron Boone, the Yankees’ manager about Williams’ moment.
