Devin Williams continues to struggle and the Yankees don’t want any excuses: “It’s a snowball”

Everything indicates that the problems with Devin Williams have not been resolved and have been increasing, and that it was of no usethe warning that a few weeks ago Aaron Boone made, to remove him from the position of stellar closer of the New York Yankees, where he arrived Luke Weaver.

However, Aaron Boone was benevolent in his reading of the unfortunate moment Williams is experiencing, so it was understood that despite everything, Williams would continue to receive opportunities: “He still has everything to be great. He’s a guy who’s in the prime of his career and he’s just going through a tough time (…) the good news for Devin is that he has everything to overcome this and get through it, and that’s my expectation,” he said at the time.

Williams wasted another opportunity

After that, Williams was given another chance, this time against the San Diego Padres on May 5, and again disaster struck: he came on in the eighth inning with a 3-0 lead, walked two, allowed a hit and left the mound with the bases loaded, a problem that Luke Weaver could no longer clean up as the Yankees fell 4-3.

Williams suffered his third consecutive defeat and the fifth lead squandered, and although the Bronx Bombers recovered the following day and thrashed the Padres 12-3, the damage was already done. Devin Williams was not self-critical and blamed the mound and the weather for his disastrous outing: “I was struggling with myself with the landing spot. It was hard to control the fastball today. I couldn’t find the release point of my fastball,” he said.

Adam Ottavino did not hold back

Comments that sparked the reaction of some, such as that of pitcher Adam Ottavino, who played for the Bronx Bombers and who did not want to remain silent, letting loose all his analysis on SNY’s ‘Baseball Night in New York’ program: “First of all, he’s having bad luck. His batting average on balls in play is too high. It’s unsustainable. And secondly, it’s the worst he’s pitched in his career. Clearly, the atmosphere in the stadium is not right when he comes into the game. The snowball is rolling in the wrong direction,” he said.

In the midst of the situation, the obvious fact emerges that Williams did not arrive at the Yankees as a project, but as a complete reality, and that there is a high demand in the team that does not admit excuses, unless the origin of all this is that the closer has not satisfactorily overcome his back injury.
