There is more information about the unfortunate death of Miller Gardner, the youngest son of former Yankees player Brett Gardner.

According to the New York Post, the 14-year-old boy died of asphyxiation while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica.Miler fell seriously ill along with several members of his family while staying at the exclusive Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest resort, located on the famous Manuel Antonio beach, Inside Edition reported.

NBC News reports that Costa Rican authorities believe Miller’s sudden death may have been the result of possible poisoning after he apparently ingested food.

Although at the moment the preliminary cause of death has not been confirmed by autopsy or toxicological analysis, Juan Pablo Alvarado, an official of the Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency, told the media.

The teenager’s body is still in Costa Rica and authorities are working with the Gardners to transfer it to the United States.

The Washington Post contacted the US State Department, which confirmed that Costa Rican authorities are actively investigating Miller’s death and closely monitoring the investigation by authorities in the Central American country.

“Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones during this difficult time, we have no further comment at this time,” the agency said.

The pain of the Gardner family

According to the statement released by Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica, Miller Gardner passed away in his sleep on Friday morning. After the painful loss, the couple said they “have so many questions and very few answers at this time”.

“Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we still cannot comprehend our lives without his infectious smile,” the statement read. “He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and friends. He lived life to the fullest every day,” the text adds.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support and encouragement during this difficult time, and we are confident that our faith, family and friends will help us cope with this unimaginable loss. Our prayers are with Miller’s classmates and friends, as well as all the other families who have lost a child too soon, and we share their pain.”

We ask that you please respect our privacy as we grieve and seek to heal,” the statement concludes.
