Despite a good draft by the Cowboys, Jerry Jones still has to wait for the respect he seeks as GM

Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys‘ outspoken owner, has long been a polarizing figure in the NFL, but recent moves to address the team’s struggles have earned him rare praise from league executives. Yes, the most scrutinized and polarizing owner in the NFL has been “vindicated” for his efforts to fix the Cowboys’ woes, though it came with a stern warning about his dual role as owner and general manager. The acknowledgment marks a shift for Jones, who has faced criticism for the team’s lack of playoff success despite their storied history.

Jones purchased the Cowboys in 1989 for $140 million, swiftly replacing coach Tom Landry with Jimmy Johnson, a move that led to Super Bowl victories in 1992, 1993, and 1995. However, the Cowboys haven’t reached the NFC Championship since, a drought that’s weighed heavily on Jones’ legacy.

After a disappointing 2024 season, where the team finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs, Jones took decisive action. He parted ways with coach Mike McCarthy and hired Brian Schottenheimer as head coach, a bold choice that has started to pay off. “Jerry’s finally making the tough calls he’s avoided for years,” an unnamed NFL executive told Bleacher Report, praising his willingness to shake things up.

NFL execs’ praise comes with a twist

However, the praise comes with a caveat. NFL execs warned Jones about continuing to serve as both owner and GM, a role he’s held since buying the team. “He needs to step back and let a real GM take over,” another executive said, suggesting that Jones’ hands-on approach may still hinder long-term success.

Jones’ influence extends beyond the field. He’s credited with securing lucrative TV deals that have boosted the NFL’s financial growth, and his net worth now sits at $17 billion, largely due to the Cowboys’ valuation.Beyond the field, Jones’ influence in the NFL is undeniable. He’s played a key role in securing lucrative TV deals, boosting the league’s revenue, and his net worth now stands at $17 billion, largely due to the Cowboys’ valuation. However, his outspoken nature keeps him under scrutiny. Fans on X are split, with one fan posting, “Jerry’s making smart moves, but he’s too stubborn as GM.” Jones’ 2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame induction and his 2023 reconciliation with Jimmy Johnson highlight his legacy, but the execs’ warning underscores the challenges ahead as he navigates his dual roles.
