Deshaun Watson’s QB coach breaks silence over Stephen A. Smith’s comments on Shedeur Sanders’ role with Browns

The Cleveland Browns made the bold decision in giving their fifth-round draft pick, Shedeur Sanders, a chance to start in the NFL preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on August 8.

While some are excited about Sanders’ opportunity, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has voiced strong criticism, suggesting that the rookie is being set up to fail. However, one notable figure has stepped in to challenge Smith’s remarks – Quincy Avery, the private quarterback coach for Deshaun Watson.

Quincy Avery pushes back against Stephen A. Smith

On August 7, Avery took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Smith’s comments. The disagreement started when Smith, speaking on “First Take,” questioned the Browns’ decision to elevate Sanders to the starting role without sufficient practice with the first-team offense.

Smith pointed out that Sanders had been working with the third-string unit, was fourth on the depth chart, and had yet to take snaps with the first-team players. He expressed concern that the Browns were throwing the rookie into a difficult situation without enough preparation, suggesting that this could lead to failure.

Avery disagreed with Smith’s assessment. He responded on X, saying, “What a nightmare. Can’t believe some folks are already lining up the excuses. Unreal.” Avery’s response indicated frustration with the idea that Sanders’ opportunity was being written off before he had even played in a game.

While Smith’s argument centered on the idea that Sanders was being set up to fail without proper preparation, Avery highlighted that it was unfair to preemptively judge the situation. Instead of focusing on Sanders’ lack of first-team reps, Avery urged a more supportive perspective, suggesting that the rookie quarterback deserved the opportunity to prove himself.

Will Shedeur Sanders prove his worth?

Sanders’ path to the NFL has been full of ups and downs. After playing under his father, Deion Sanders, at the University of Colorado, Shedeur was once considered a potential first-round pick. However, his draft stock took a hit as the 2025 NFL Draft approached, and he ended up being selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns.

Despite the skepticism surrounding his selection, the Browns clearly saw something in Sanders worth investing in.

In training camp, Sanders has shown his dedication to improving, following his coaches’ guidance, and interacting positively with fans. He’s also earned praise for his approachability, often taking time to sign autographs for children attending camp.

While he still has much to prove, the Browns have placed their trust in him for this high-stakes preseason opportunity.

As Sanders prepares for his first preseason start, many will be watching closely to see how he handles the challenge. Can he silence the doubters, like Smith, and prove that he has what it takes to succeed in the NFL? His performance on Friday night could mark the beginning of a new chapter in his career, one that could either validate the Browns’ faith in him or confirm the criticisms of those who doubt his readiness.

The stage is set for Sanders to demonstrate his potential and perhaps change the narrative surrounding his NFL debut.
