The battle for the starting quarterback position with the Cleveland Browns is shaping up to be the drama to follow in the coming days – and likely months – within the NFL. Currently, there is no clear starter, and what makes this story even more intriguing is that one of the contenders is the highly publicized Shedeur Sanders.
Media pressure is mounting around the Browns’ training camp. There are five quarterbacks on the team, including those signed through free agency, Joe Flacco – who had a successful stint with the team – and Kenny Pickett, a former first-round pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers who won the Super Bowl as a backup for the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
The other two quarterbacks are rookies selected in the recent NFL Draft: Dillon Gabriel, taken in the third round, and Shedeur Sanders, who surprisingly fell to the fifth round in the draft.
That’s four quarterbacks – the fifth is Deshaun Watson, who has suffered two Achilles tendon injuries and appears unlikely to play in 2025. Still, he hasn’t given up, although the reality is that he has been a major disappointment for the Browns.
Deshaun Watson and his subtle social media jabs
Since arriving in 2022, Deshaun Watson has only played in 19 games over three seasons due to injuries and suspensions. The Clemson product signed a $230 million fully guaranteed contract at the time.
Watson’s numbers have been terrible: just 19 games, 3,365 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in three seasons. Team owner Jimmy Haslam has publicly admitted that acquiring Watson was a major mistake for the franchise.
Still, despite having everything against him, Deshaun Watson continues his recovery process and recently posted a motivational message on social media – notably, wearing Cleveland Browns gear.
The reality is that 2025 looks bleak for Deshaun Watson’s chances of playing. Given the current quarterback competition, it’s possible he may never suit up again for the Cleveland Browns.
