MLB postseason gives us drama on the field, but it was Fox analyst Derek Jeter who stole the show off it, starring in a viral moment live on air during coverage of Game 3 of the American League Division Series between the Mariners and Tigers.

The former Yankees player, affectionately nicknamed “Mr. November” for his playoff exploits, was on the pregame analysis panel. The start of the game had been delayed three hours due to rain in Detroit, forcing Jeter and his teammates to extend their time on the air.

Due to the unforeseen rain, many fans may have missed an engagement or been pressed for time, however, analysts and former players who comment on games can also be affected.

Derek Jeter’s viral moment

It was in the middle of a serious discussion about the Yankees’ performance in their series against the Blue Jays when Jeter’s family situation interrupted the programming. His mobile phone started ringing, and the former player, with a mischievous smile, took advantage of the pause to make a revelation:

“Excuse me, it’s a rain delay,” Jeter apologized to the panel and audience. “I had an appointment, a parent-teacher meeting that I’m going to miss. I’m sorry, guys!”

The confession provoked laughter on set, especially from Red Sox legend David Ortiz, who urged the Yankees icon to take the call. Jeter, who has four children, did not confirm whether he took the call during the commercial break, but video of the amusing moment quickly went viral on social media.

A healthy Derek Jeter habit

This incident is not the first family commitment that has led Jeter to miss baseball duties this year. Earlier in the season, he had already missed the Yankees’ traditional Old Timers’ Day, an absence he explained in an emotional video message, regretting having missed the tribute to the 2000 World Series championship team.

Beyond the comedic moment and the viralization on social networks, Jeter also referred to the Yankees’ situation on the field, which does not look good.

“They have to find a way to stop the Toronto Blue Jays’ offense,” the former player explained when looking for solutions for the Yankees and how they can turn their series around.
