Derek Jeter returned to The Herd and made sure Colin Cowherd didn’t forget one of his most awkward baseball mistakes.
The former New York Yankees captain appeared on Cowherd’s FS1 show ahead of MLB All-Star Game coverage and immediately brought up the host’s infamous interview blunder from two years ago.
“Last time I was on your show, you asked me about facing Nolan Ryan, so let’s just hope you got your facts straight this time,” Jeter said, as reported by the New York Post.
Cowherd laughed and admitted he had been burned by the mistake.
“Yeah, you crushed me on that,” Cowherd replied.
The error came during a previous interview when Cowherd attempted to compare Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes to Ryan, only to ask Jeter about facing the legendary flamethrower.
Jeter quickly corrected him then, repeating “no, no, no” and pointing out that he never played against Ryan.
Why Cowherd got it wrong
The timeline made the mistake impossible to defend.
Ryan’s final MLB season came in 1993, while Jeter did not make his major league debut with the Yankees until 1995.
Jeter went on to become one of the defining players of the late 1990s and 2000s, winning five World Series titles, making 14 All-Star teams, and earning induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Ryan, by contrast, was already retired before Jeter’s Yankees career properly began.
Jeter talks MLB changes
The moment was playful rather than hostile, and Jeter later shifted into a more serious discussion about the modern game.
Now working as a Fox Sports analyst, Jeter said he supports MLB’s automated ball-strike challenge system and suggested it would’ve helped him during his own career.
The league has continued to test technology designed to reduce missed calls while keeping a human element behind the plate.
Jeter’s appearance ultimately gave Cowherd what sports television often does best: a little embarrassment, a little self-awareness and a memorable line from a guest who knew exactly when to throw the first pitch.
Cowherd got through the interview without another history lesson, but Jeter made sure the warning came early.
