Derek Carr says he’s staying ready for an NFL comeback

Just a few months after officially retiring from the NFL, former Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr has sparked speculation about a potential comeback.

In a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Carr shared that while he remains retired for now, he continues to train and keep his body in shape, preparing in case a future opportunity to return arises.

Carr made it clear that his current training regimen is fueled by his love of fitness and staying active rather than a definitive plan to rejoin the league.

“I love to train. That’s going to be the rest of my life,” he explained. Despite recovering from a serious shoulder injury, Carr still throws footballs occasionally, often playing catch with his children or friends as part of his ongoing rehabilitation. He also touched on the spiritual element that influences his mindset, saying, “If God wanted me to do it, I gotta be ready.”

While he stopped short of committing to a return, Carr admitted, “I wouldn’t say never,” adding that in the past, when he’s said “never,” circumstances have changed.

Carr’s NFL journey and recent challenges

Derek Carr’s professional football career began when he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2014. Over the course of nine seasons with Oakland and later the Las Vegas Raiders, Carr emerged as the team’s all-time leading passer and a four-time Pro Bowl selection. His 2016 season was a particular highlight, finishing third in the NFL MVP voting and helping lead the Raiders to the playoffs on two occasions.

In 2023, Carr entered free agency and secured a lucrative four-year, $150 million contract with the New Orleans Saints. His debut season with the Saints was solid, guiding the team to a 9-8 record. However, the momentum didn’t last as injuries derailed his second year. Carr suffered a concussion and a hand injury that limited him to only 10 games before his season came to an early end.

The offseason brought more troubling news when it was revealed Carr was battling a significant shoulder injury, compounded by degenerative rotator cuff issues that threatened to sideline him for the entire 2025 season. This grim prognosis led to widespread speculation about his future in the league, culminating in his surprising decision to retire in May 2025.

While Carr seems focused on healing and recovery for now, his remarks suggest that he isn’t ruling out a future return. He remains dedicated to staying in peak physical condition and keeping his skills sharp, leaving the possibility open that he could step back onto the field if the circumstances and his body allow it.

For fans and analysts alike, the prospect of Carr making a comeback is an intriguing one. His passion for the game and commitment to training clearly remain strong, even if the next chapter of his career is still uncertain.
