Deontay has had difficult times in his career due to constant injuries, however, he has recently reappeared presumably recovered from his injuries and with a determination to regain his level.

This was stated by Wilder, who confirmed that he is in his best physical and mental condition, after years of ups and downs conditioned by the different injuries that hindered his ability to establish fluency in his career, conditioning his performance in the ring.

What happened to Deontay Wilder?

In a recent interview with BoxingScene, the 39-year-old American boxer shared details about the physical problems that have accompanied him in recent seasons:

I had two surgeries on my shoulders. I was injured for at least three or four years of my career

According to Wilder himself, these discomforts prevented him from displaying his characteristic aggressive style, to the point that, in his words, he had lost his iconic “Windmill”, a nickname by which he was known for the power and speed of his punches. However, he declared that he is renewed and completely healed so he is physically fit to resume his career. “Now I have it back,” said Wilder, referring to his nickname: ‘Winmill Wilder’.

Despite the physical adversities, Wilder decided to continue fighting, adapting to the pain rather than stopping his career. He acknowledged that rest would have been the best decision from a medical point of view, but he chose to continue competing, aware of what boxing represents in his personal and professional life.

When is Deontay Wilder’s next fight?

With the injuries seemingly behind him, the former champion has scheduled a fight for June 27 against Tyrrell Anthony Herndon, as well as a possible mega-fight against Anthony Joshua on the horizon, a bout that has been speculated since 2024.

I’m ready. As long as he’s in the division and so am I, I’ll always be willing to fight

In addition to the hypothetical matchup with Joshua, Wilder has been linked as a possible opponent for Francis Ngannou, which has been interpreted as a clear sign of the confidence that Wilder and his team have in his fitness.
