Democrats mock Harrison Butker and could unleash the wrath of Brittany Mahomes

A recent post from the official Democratic Party account on X targeted Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, calling him “washed” while also taking a similar jab at President Donald Trump.

The video quickly drew attention, not just because of its political undertones, but because Butker has been openly vocal about his conservative views and his alignment with MAGA.

The taunt has certainly raised questions about whether such public ridicule might get a response out of Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, as she unquestionably supports the Chiefs as well as Trump.

Butker and the Chiefs are facing unchartered waters after falling to the Houston Texans on Sunday night. The Chiefs now sit at 6-7 and are at serious risk of missing the playoffs for the first time with Mahomes under center.

While not totally to blame, Butker‘s sub-par play this season hasn’t helped Kansas City. His kicking woes were on full display on Sunday, as he missed a 43-yard field goal late in the second quarter that sent the Chiefs into halftime down 10-0 instead of 10-3. Heading into Sunday, Butker had made 21 of 24 field goals and 28 of 32 extra points.

Away from the field, Butker has never hidden his faith or political stance. Over the years, he has used his platform to speak about Catholic beliefs and his views on cultural issues. These positions have made him a polarizing figure, as he is admired by some for his conviction and criticized by others who see his stance as controversial.

With Democrats now taking a jab at him on social media, time will tell if the situation turns into a larger cultural flashpoint.

Brittany Mahomes, meanwhile, has established herself as a prominent figure in her own right, balancing public visibility while speaking about her faith. She has previously addressed criticism over her political and religious stances, emphasizing the importance of kindness and standing by one’s convictions.

All of this suggests it wouldn’t be a surprise if she responds if she interprets the Democrats’ video as more than just an attack on Butker for his poor play on the field.

Why mocking Butker could backfire

Butker’s controversies extend beyond social media. In 2024, he delivered a commencement address at a private Catholic college that criticized gender ideology, the LGBTQ+ community, and changing cultural norms. The speech garnered national attention, drawing both condemnation and support.

Despite the backlash, Butker stood firm, emphasizing that his statements reflected his deeply held beliefs. Patrick Mahomes publicly acknowledged their differences but defended Butker‘s right to express himself, highlighting the distinction between personal belief and professional conduct.

As for on the field, Butker‘s deal has become a potential headache for Kansas City. His cap hit for the next season is projected to be approximately $7.3 million, the highest among all NFL kickers.

Releasing him would create a significant dead-money charge while leaving the team without a proven replacement at a position that is notoriously difficult to fill.

Retaining him, meanwhile, means hoping he can return to elite form, a prospect that remains uncertain. Beyond Butker, the Chiefs’ entire special teams unit has struggled this season, raising questions about coaching and system issues that contribute to kicking woes.

Butker is expected to remain the team’s kicker, for now, as cutting him would likely do more harm than good financially. Yet, this decision comes with uncertainty, because if his struggles continue, the Chiefs will be caught between loyalty to a previously dependable player and the need to optimize roster efficiency.
