NFL teams have been warned to ensure they give both of Deion Sanders‘ sons fair shots in the sport or risk the wrath of Coach Prime, as Shedeur and Shilo Sanders head to the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers respectively.
It was a tough 2025 NFL Draft for the Sanders household from April 24-26 as Shedeur plummeted from being a First Round pick down to the Fifth Round, whilst nobody wanted to take a chance on Shilo.
Eventually, the 23-year-old Shedeur found his future in Ohio as a quarterback whilst the 25-year-old Shilo heads to the Buccaneers organization as a safety on a free agency deal.
It’s unclear if he will make the starting roster in Florida, but he faces himself working his way up after struggling in pre-draft performances whilst facing a tough end to his career as a Colorado Buffalo.
But Mike Florio, one of the NFL’s lead insiders, warns that if he doesn’t get a fair chance at the Raymond James Stadium then it could be bad PR for the Bucs front office as Sanders will make it very clear to the world.
“Any team that gives Shilo a shot needs to be ready for it to be a fair shot,” Florio told Pro Football Talk. “Because Deion has the public profile to call out anyone who doesn’t, in Deion‘s view, give either Shilo or Shedeur a fair shot.”
Why did the Bucs take Shilo Sanders?
This influence and role in his son’s careers are reportedly part of why teams didn’t want to take a chance on Shedeur, fearing that they might not have the full control they want over a position so sensitive as the quarterback role.
It prompted teams desperate for QBs, such as the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders to head elsewhere. Even the Browns drafted Dillon Gabriel before moving for Sanders.
And the same protectionary policy from Coach Prime, who retains his job with the Buffaloes, will no doubt be extended to Shilo so why did Tampa Bay pick him up? Todd Bowles, head coach, explains hat they see in him.
“He’s a heck of a tackler and he knows the game very well,” Bowles told Sirius XM. “He can see the game very well.
“Giving him a chance to play, we think he has a shot to help us from a safety standpoint and from a special teams standpoint. So, I’m excited to get him here and see how he moves.
“He’s a very smart player and he understands the game very well. So, we thought it was worth a shot to see what he can do and I think he’ll show himself well.”
