Deion Sanders reveals the struggle Shedeur Sanders has endured behind the scenes with the Browns

Shedeur Sanders‘ first taste of NFL action came under the harsh glare of Sunday afternoon football and against one of the league’s toughest defenses.

The Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback made his debut in Week 11 of the 2025 season, stepping in for injured starter Dillon Gabriel during a 23-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The outing proved difficult, as Sanders completed only four of sixteen passes for 47 yards with one interception as Cleveland‘s offense sputtered in the second half.

Gabriel, who had been effective before leaving with a concussion, was ruled out at halftime. Sanders, the fifth-round pick out of Colorado, was suddenly thrown into a game that demanded poise and precision.

While the numbers were far from ideal, the debut represented an important milestone for the 23-year-old-and one that made his father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, beam with pride.

“I know the fight behind the fight,” Sanders said on Tuesday. “I know what’s been transpiring behind the curtains, and I’m just proud of him. Because he’s not just saying the right things, he’s doing and living the right things. That’s just who he is, he’s a Sanders.”

A baptism by fire in Baltimore

For Shedeur, the performance offered a reminder of the NFL’s unforgiving learning curve. The Ravens‘ defense, known for its pressure and physicality, forced him into hurried throws and limited his comfort in the pocket.

Though he flashed glimpses of confidence with a few strong completions, the timing and rhythm that defined his college career at Colorado never fully clicked.

Still, the Browns‘ coaching staff recognized that few young quarterbacks thrive in such sudden circumstances. Sanders entered mid-game with limited first-team practice reps, facing a defense that thrives on confusing inexperienced passers. Despite the struggles, he earned praise internally for maintaining his composure and continuing to push through adversity.

Deion‘s words underscored how personal this moment was. Having coached his son throughout his college career, the elder Sanders has witnessed Shedeur‘s development up close.

The pair made headlines at Colorado in 2023 when Shedeur threw for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while leading the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record and national recognition as one of the most improved teams in the country.

The Browns selected Sanders with the No. 144 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, fifty selections after they took Gabriel. The plan had been for Shedeur to learn behind his fellow rookie, but Gabriel‘s injury forced that timetable to accelerate. Now, Cleveland must decide whether to give Sanders another start if Gabriel remains in concussion protocol.
