Deion Sanders reflects on son Shedeur’s NFL debut: “Thank you for everything you’ve brought us through”

Shedeur Sanders officially stepped onto an NFL field for the first time on Sunday, making his debut for the Cleveland Browns after Dillon Gabriel entered concussion protocol.

The rookie quarterback faced a challenging situation, taking snaps with the first-team offense for the first time in his career. Despite the tough outing, it marked a significant milestone for the 23-year-old and his family.

Deion Sanders, famously known as Coach Prime, took to social media on Monday to post his first reaction following his son’s debut. “We must acknowledge all that GOD does & say Thank you,” Sanders wrote on X.

“From waking us up to allowing us to sleep wonderfully, Lord we thank u. Thank u for everything you’ve done, everything you’ve brought us through & everyday we get the opportunity to glorify u. Thank you. #CoachPrime.”

While Coach Prime has yet to publicly comment specifically on Shedeur Sanders’ performance, it’s clear his focus remains on leading the Colorado Buffaloes.

Nonetheless, the support for his son is evident, as he will undoubtedly be rooting for Shedeur to succeed at the professional level.

In his first NFL action, Shedeur Sanders completed 4-of-16 passes for 47 yards and threw an interception, a stat line that reflects the difficulty of stepping into a live NFL game under limited preparation. Cleveland’s offense had struggled throughout the season, prompting fans to eagerly await Sanders’ appearance.

Sanders grateful for fan support

Shedeur Sanders acknowledged the enthusiastic response from Browns fans following his entrance.

“Yeah, I’m extremely thankful. Well, first, let me say this,” he said after the game. “When Dillon out there playing and all that, I appreciate the fans. I appreciate everybody, but I’m a good person overall, so I don’t really like him not feeling comfortable, confident when he get out there. So it puts everything in a tough spot, and it’s not helping the team. So, that could be taken as, ‘okay, I’m being a distraction’, even though I ain’t doing that, even though I’m not doing nothing.

“But I’m thankful for the supporters, thankful for the fans, thankful for everybody out there that believes. And yeah, when I got out there, I definitely felt them, and I’m truly thankful for it. I’m just thankful that I’m out here, I’m thankful for the opportunity. Thankful seeing all them 12 jerseys out there, and it was a great feeling for that, but the feeling of losing, that ain’t nothing we going to get comfortable with, like, on my watch, for sure.”

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the rookie’s debut, acknowledging both the positives and areas for improvement.

“Yeah, obviously all players, we’ll look at it, but he’s going to battle like he does,” Stefanski said. “So, I’m sure there’s things that we can clean up, but those are things we’ll look at tomorrow.”

If Dillon Gabriel is not cleared from concussion protocol, Shedeur Sanders is expected to start in the upcoming road game against the Las Vegas Raiders, giving him a full week to build chemistry with the first-team offense.

While the debut was challenging, it represents an important first step in Shedeur Sanders’ professional journey.
