In the Sanders household, expectations are not just high, they’re public and with both of Deion‘s sons stepping into pivotal career moments, and the family’s dynamic of accountability has taken center stage often.
So it’s no shock the 57-year-old made an introspective, and pointed, Instagram post with a quote about choosing the right partner in life, which has stirred speculation that it was directed toward his younger son, Shedeur.
“You’re not just choosing a partner. You’re choosing a mirror. A teacher. A teammate. And a co-architect of your future. #CoachPrime,” Deion posted to the Meta-owned app.
It comes as a warning to make sure whoever the 23-year-old chooses in his romantic life will not negatively impact his NFL career, which is in the early stages with the Cleveland Browns at the Huntington Bank Field.
The ex-University of Colorado quarterback has remained a lightning rod for attention throughout his collegiate career and into the 2025 NFL Draft, after he dropped down to be the 144th pick overall.
And now Deion‘s warning adds philosophical weight to Shedeur’s path to football stardom and internal peace, as he aims to win the starting spot ahead of Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel.
It comes from a personal place too after Coach Prime’s own relationship ventures. He was married to Carolyn Chambers in 1989; they divorced in 1998 and share two children.
He then married Pilar Biggers in 1999 and the couple had three children, before a highly publicized split.
Most recently, he was dating Tracey Edmonds, a businesswoman and TV personality, but that came to a close in 2023 despite them being engaged for four years. He now appears to be single.
Pilar piles pressure on Shilo Sanders
Deion might be passing on words to his children either but Pilar is busy sending warning messages to Shilo, who plays as a safety with the Tampa Bay Buccanneers after going undrafted.
Expectations are, as they are with all Sanders children, high for Shilo to make an impact in the NFL at the Raymond James Stadium and she reinforced this after footage of his new locker room surfaced.
“Yes ‘Interception Gloves,'” Pilar commented, a reference to the fact that he failed to secure a single interception in the 2024/25 NCAA season with the Buffaloes, despite making 67 tackles and a sack.
For Pilar, that stat line is no longer acceptable as she demands he’d better start producing turnovers on the professional scene if he aims to stat at the front of the NFL conversation.
That maternal push complements and contrasts with Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles‘ pragmatic stance, however.
“Like the rest of the safeties, he’s very intelligent,” Bowles told reporters. “He’s very loud. You can hear him making calls and everything, so he’s got a good grasp of things day one.
“You have to make plays in pads. Knowing what to do and then doing it consistently, that’s the real test.”
