Deion Sanders gets emotional after a question about the pre-game walk tradition with Shedeur and Shilo

It happened during interview with former NFL player Asante Samuel. What started as a laid back conversation quickly turned personal when the topic of Shedeur and Shilo came up. Samuel casually asked if this season felt more challenging without them. That’s when Coach Prime usually all swagger and confidence paused, and something shifted. When he recalled how one of his players recently told him, “Coach, you know we’re still gonna do that walk, right?” the emotion hit. Sanders smiled, tried to brush it off, but couldn’t hold back. “You trying to make me cry, man,” he said, his voice cracking just a bit.

Deion Sanders: “You trying to make me cry”

For years, that walk wasn’t just a routine, it was a symbol. Before games, Sanders would walk the field with his sons, a quiet moment of connection, focus, and unity before the storm of kickoff. It was never about cameras or spectacle. It was about grounding, reflection, and showing his boys what presence, pride, and preparation looked like up close.

The tradition started during their college days at Jackson State. It began as a way for Deion to stay close to his sons who both played for him and to show them that football was more than just plays and stats. It was about brotherhood, identity, and carrying yourself with purpose. Fans eventually caught on, and it became one of the most beloved moments on game day: Coach Prime, walking with Shedeur and Shilo, locked in but still full of love. It was quiet, but powerful.

Now, with his sons beginning their rookie seasons in the NFL, the question hit Coach Prime in a deeper way. It took him back to when Shedeur and Shilo were just kids, walking beside their dad long before he became a legend.

What started as a quiet tradition between a father and his sons had evolved into something bigger.

Behind the shades, the charisma, and the championship rings, Deion Sanders is a dad first. And when a player steps in and honors that legacy, it’s not just emotional it’s a sign that the lessons he’s passed down are landing where they need to.
