In today’s NFL, you need a star quarterback to get anywhere; the Kansas City Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes, the Buffalo Bills have Josh Allen, the Baltimore Ravens have Lamar Jackson. To make the step up from the basement to the penthouse, you need to have “the guy” behind center.
For several teams set to select at the top of the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders represents “the guy”. Here is a player who dazzled fans for two years at the University of Colorado, breaking school passing records and leading the Buffaloes to a nine-win season in 2024. But Shedeur‘s father Deion — an NFL icon who has also been his head coach in Boulder — is poised to exert substantial control over the 22-year-old’s destination come draft night in April.
Cam Newton tells Coach Prime to throw his weight around
Cam Newton knows a thing or two about the value of a star quarterback behind center. Newton, a former NFL MVP, played a pivotal role in turning the Carolina Panthers into Super Bowl contenders during the mid-2010s; in fact, the Panthers have not made the playoffs since they lost Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season.
Newton, now an analyst, has advised Deion Sanders unofficially as to how Shedeur’s draft night should go. Newton says father and son should embody their family’s best characteristics by agreeing on a preferred destination…and throwing their weight around to make it a reality.
“I would love for Deion Sanders to really consider, ‘Hey, no, I’m good. We good on this.’ Because that really embodies who the Sanders family is,” Newton said about the idea of “accepting” whichever team drafts Shedeur.
The Tennessee Titans and the Cleveland Browns hold the top two picks in April’s draft, as well as unsavory reputations for failing to develop quarterback prospects. Given how much the Sanders clan loves the limelight, Newton says that Shedeur has “New York Giant” written all over him. The Giants, picking #3 overall, have a #1 receiver in Malik Nabers…and a gaping hole at quarterback.
“I think New York presents a bigger pool for the Sanders name,” Newton explained. “What would that look like? And if we’re talking about business alone and opportunity alone. This is not even about Deion, more or less than about Shedeur right? I think Shedeur has him written all over it as a New York Giant.”
