DeAndre Hopkins is changing his approach, and his return to the Chiefs might make sense

DeAndre Hopkins is reconsidering his career trajectory, and a return to the Kansas City Chiefs may provide the ideal opportunity, as he reflects on the success, chemistry, and enjoyment he experienced in 2024 both on and off the field.

His previous tenure with the Chiefs allowed him to compete in a Super Bowl while developing a strong connection with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid, creating memorable moments on and off the field, including stops at fan-favorite spots like Gates Bar-B-Q.

“We played ball in KC. We had fun,” Hopkins said. “We got Pat Mahomes out there. Ain’t no script. Ain’t no you run a route like this. St is get open. Play ball, read Pat. That’s why they win. That’s why Andy Reid is the goat. So, you know, st, they’re gonna keep winning. Gotta have fun.”

Hopkins’ standout season with Kansas City and potential return

During the 2024 season with the Chiefs, Hopkins recorded a touchdown and a two-point conversion in Super Bowl LIX, becoming only the second wide receiver in history to achieve that feat in a single game. Over ten regular-season contests, he totaled 41 receptions for 437 yards and four touchdowns, showcasing his ability to make an immediate impact in high-pressure situations.

After being traded to the Baltimore Ravens for the 2025 season, Hopkins‘ production dipped significantly, catching 22 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns in limited starts. He attributed the decline to system fit rather than coaching. “So it ain’t nothing personal,” Hopkins said. “But obviously it’s evident that the person calling the plays didn’t feel like my skill set matched their kind of play calls for me to be in on certain things, but you know I ain’t mad at them.”

The Chiefs wide receiver room outside of tight end Travis Kelce struggled in 2025 due to injuries, inconsistency, and a lack of separation, which limited Mahomes‘ ability to stretch the field. Tyquan Thornton missed key games, contributing to the team’s 6-11 record and their first playoff miss in over a decade.

As Kansas City looks ahead to 2026, the team faces a critical need for a proven, dynamic wide receiver who can complement Kelce, create explosive plays, and restore balance to the passing game. A return of Hopkins on a team-friendly one-year deal could provide immediate stability, while his familiarity with Reid‘s system would allow him to seamlessly integrate into the offense.

Adding Hopkins alongside Kelce and running back Kenneth Walker III would give Mahomes multiple vertical threats, reduce predictability, and improve offensive efficiency. Beyond filling a pressing roster need, a reunion would restore chemistry and continuity to the Chiefs‘ passing attack, giving the team a proven playmaker capable of delivering big moments while helping Kansas City target a strong bounce-back season.
