Dawn Staley has long been a towering figure in women’s basketball, and while her record on the court speaks volumes-475 wins, three NCAA championships, and seven Final Four appearances with South Carolina-her influence off the court was on display again this weekend.

On Saturday, Staley took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message directed at Vanessa Bryant, widow of the late Kobe Bryant, after receiving a special pair of Nike Kobe 4 Protro CHBL “Lightning” sneakers.

These custom sneakers, expected to be released in summer 2025, are part of Kobe‘s enduring legacy through Nike.

In her post, Staley wrote, “@vanessabryant I don’t mean to flood your timeline but truly grateful and thankful to receive part of @kobebryant legacy and your vision and love for him elevate that legacy! Don’t ever stop….mamba mentality!”

The gesture from Vanessa Bryant served as a recognition of Staley’s continued advocacy and leadership in women’s basketball. As one of the sport’s most respected coaches and role models, Staley’s connection to the Bryant family and the Mamba Mentality runs deep.

A lasting legacy on and off the court

Staley‘s relationship with Nike spans decades, dating back to her college days at the University of Virginia, where she led her team to three Final Fours and a national championship appearance.

She became one of the early faces of women’s basketball at Nike when she launched her own signature shoe, the Nike Zoom S5, in 1999.

In 2024, her leadership earned her a spot in Nike’s Athlete Think Tank 3.0, a program aimed at shaping a more equitable future in sports. The initiative reflects Staley‘s commitment to expanding opportunities for female athletes and coaches at every level.

Earlier in 2025, she was also vocal in her support for former Gamecock and WNBA superstar A’ja Wilson, praising the debut of Wilson’s Nike A’One Black Label Player Edition shoes. Staley’s celebration of female athletes’ accomplishments continues to elevate the visibility and respect for women in sport.

Her contributions were further recognized in January 2025 when she signed a landmark $25.25 million extension with South Carolina, which includes a base salary starting at $4 million per year, increasing annually, along with a $500,000 signing bonus.

The deal secures her position through the 2029-30 season and cements her status as the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball history.

As she prepares for another run at a national title, Staley‘s influence transcends the court. Her embrace of Kobe’s legacy and her continued advocacy for women’s basketball remind fans that success is not just about victories, but about impact-and she’s making plenty of both.
