The Cleveland Guardians overcame the Detroit Tigers in their first game of the series, a victory that came not without a moment of terror. David Fry, the Cleveland team’s designated hitter, was hit hard in the face after leaning over the plate to try to get on base.
Tarik Skubal was the one who hit Fry – comically speaking. As soon as the Detroit pitcher realized that the ball made contact with the batter’s face, he took off his cap and put his hands to his face in a show of fright and regret. The Tigers are second in the American League Central, just behind the Guardians.
David Fry suffered a fractured nose and facial bones
Guardians designated hitter David Fry suffered a broken nose and facial fractures after being hit by a pitch from Tarik Skubal against the Tigers. Fans inside Progressive Field watched in silence, and players on both sides stood in shock.
What began as an important game between the Guardians and Tigers quickly turned into a night focused on Fry’s health. Cleveland released an update confirming that imaging and clinical tests showed that Fry suffered multiple minimally displaced fractures on the left side of his face and nose.
Jose Ramirez gives Cleveland a 5-2 victory over Detroit
Dominican Jose Ramirez drove in a run with a bunt as Cleveland rallied in a strange sixth inning against Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, and the Guardians beat the Tigers 5-2 on Tuesday to catch them for first place in the American League Central.
Cleveland caught up to Detroit after being 15 and a half games back on July 8. The Guardians, who were still 12 and a half games behind the Tigers on August 25, have won 11 of 12 games. They are 17-5 in September. The Tigers have lost seven consecutive games and ten of 11. Their big lead has been reduced to zero.
