Canelo Alvarez has ‘monopolized’ two high-impact boxing dates in the United States, May 5 and September 16, or the Saturdays closest to those dates to fight in Las Vegas.

But in 2026 he will not step into the ring in May because he is recovering from elbow surgery and will return on September 12 in Saudi Arabia.

Benavidez vs Zurdo Ramirez in Las Vegas

With Saturday, May 2, free in Las Vegas, it is David Benavidez (31-0) who takes the baton to face another Mexican: Gilberto Ramirez (48-1).

“I am truly honored to defend my WBA/WBO titles and represent Mexico during the Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas. It will be a legendary night. Thank you for all the love and support. See you in Las Vegas,” the Mazatlan native shared on Instagram.

The fight between the Mexican Monster and Zurdo Ramirez puts the latter’s titles on the line at 200 pounds for the WBA and WBO.

David Benavidez seeks to be champion in three divisions

This will be Ramirez’s third defense of his cruiserweight title, while for Benavidez it will be his first title fight at 200 pounds.

Red Flag is already the super middleweight and light heavyweight champion and now ventures into a higher category against the unified monarch.
