David Benavidez gives take on Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford: “You never want to doubt him”

For a couple of years, it seemed like the best fight to make for Canelo Alvarez involved David Benavidez. The “Mexican Monster” had run through his opposition with ease, becoming the most dangerous boxer at super middleweight in the process, which set up a mega fight against Canelo. But Alvarez continually ignored Benavidez’s pleas, and both ultimately moved on.

Benavidez moved up to light heavyweight and has already won titles, while Alvarez is gearing up to fight Terence Crawford in what should be an epic event. Although Benavidez is still annoyed by how Alvarez went about their “negotiations”, the 28-year-old has come out to give his thoughts on the Mexican’s upcoming fight. Surprisingly, he didn’t have any bad things to say about Canelo.

David Benavidez says Terence Crawford needs to avoid getting hit to beat Canelo Alvarez

Benavidez spoke to Ring Magazine for an interview and admitted he’s cautious about saying Crawford can pull off the upset, simply because it would be like Benavidez going up in weight to face Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury.

Despite being a technically gifted fighter, Crawford’s biggest issue – at least in Benavidez’s eyes – will be when he gets hit by Alvarez. If “Bud” avoids getting hit, he can win. But it could prove very difficult if he doesn’t do that: “You never want to doubt Terence Crawford, but there’s weight classes for a reason“.

If Crawford’s added weight and strength translate in the ring, then Alvarez could be in for a bit of a surprise. But many boxers and analysts have expressed the same caution in regards to the weight class discrepancy.
