The world championship for David Benavidez came when he forgot about the super middleweight category, where Canelo Alvarez did not give him the opportunity as a mandatory challenger.
By moving up to 175 pounds, the Mexican Monster became the challenger for Dmitry Bivol, but the Russian also did not accept the fight and the WBC stripped him of the title to give it to Benavidez.
Benavidez no longer has the “fantasy” of challenging Saul Alvarez
At Thursday’s press conference in Las Vegas, Saul Alvarez was asked if he would fight David Benavidez after his fight against Jermell Charlo on Saturday, September 13, to which he replied that he is not closing the door on that option.
But the one who seems to leave him behind is David Benavidez, who wants to continue as champion in the super middleweight and puts a condition on Alvarez if he wants to face him.
To be honest, a fight between Canelo and I is never going to happen at 168 pounds, I wouldn’t go back to 168. I’m fine at 175 and I’m world champion here, so if he wants to go up to 175, that’s fine.
“I can’t live in a fantasy world where maybe I’m going to get this fight or that fight, I’ve done my job to get it. It’s one of the biggest fights in boxing, but I’m not going to waste my time with someone who doesn’t want the fight to happen. I’m trying to fight people who really want to fight me,” he told The Ring.
But the fight may not be completely ruled out, as boxing’s current money man, Sheikh Turki Alalshikh, is contracted to Canelo Alvarez and works with Benavidez.
“I’m still with PBC and Al Haymon, but we’re working together (with Alalshikh). I hope to have more opportunities and get the biggest fights I’ve been looking for,” said Red Flag about his relationship with the sheikh of Saudi Arabia.
