Dave Roberts reveals confidence is the big issue for Dodgers’ bullpen

With the final stretch of the current season and the postseason in sight, the Los Angeles Dodgers are facing a crisis in their bullpen that could cost them dearly

After a painful loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, manager Dave Roberts has pointed out that the problem is not a lack of talent, but a lack of confidence in key moments of the game.

A night to forget at Dodger Stadium

The game against the Phillies seemed to be heading for a sure victory after five hitless innings by Shohei Ohtani, who also hit a home run. However, the bullpen collapsed in spectacular fashion. Justin Wrobleski allowed five consecutive hits, including two home runs, that turned a 4-0 lead into a 6-4 deficit. Although the team managed to tie the game, another ninth-inning failure ended with a three-run homer that sealed the loss.

Trust, the missing ingredient

After the game, Dave Roberts was clear: “They’re lacking confidence.” The manager explained that the relievers have the desire to perform, but are not executing good pitches at key moments. This lack of confidence is affecting their consistency, especially against teams that press every at-bat. Roberts insists he believes in the talent of the group, but acknowledges that without confidence, mistakes multiply.

A talented but inconsistent bullpen

Throughout the season, the Dodgers’ bullpen has shown flashes of quality, but has also been prone to collapses that have cost important games. Players such as Blake Treinen have had mixed performances, and while some relievers have delivered at key moments, the lack of consistency remains a concern. The situation is exacerbated by the proximity of the playoffs, where every mistake can be decisive.

Time is running out to correct course

With only 11 games remaining in the regular season, the Dodgers must find an urgent solution. The pressure is on, as the San Diego Padres are only two games behind in the battle for the divisional lead. The team needs to regain collective confidence in its bullpen if it is to avoid an early exit and have a real shot at the postseason.

Roberts bets on internal talent

Despite the setbacks, Dave Roberts maintains his faith in the pitchers he has. He has not spoken of drastic changes, but of working on the mental aspect of the game. The key, according to the manager, is for the relievers to believe in their abilities again and execute with determination. Confidence, more than any technical adjustment, could be the decisive factor for the Dodgers to be a dominant team again in October.
