Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham recently launched a podcast with West Wilson titled Show Me Something. The project is described as a dynamic, unfiltered show that blends sports, pop culture, and broader conversation, offering fans a fresh perspective from one of the WNBA’s most outspoken personalities.
While the podcast is already live and generating positive reactions, few knew it nearly became a Barstool Sports production. Dave Portnoy, founder and owner of the media company, admitted he walked away from the potential deal, despite being a passionate supporter of the Fever.
Speaking on The Unnamed Show, Portnoy detailed why Barstool ultimately passed on the opportunity.
Speaking of podcasts, one that I passed on, which I thought was going to happen, just went live,” Portnoy said. “Sophie Cunningham, West Wilson. I passed on it. We spent a lot of time. They did a test podcast, these two, in our New York office. Then we had another host (try out).
According to Portnoy, the breakdown stemmed not from Cunningham herself but from her agent and the heavy demands involved in negotiations.
It wasn’t so much her… Anytime I have to deal with agents, it’s hard. I really thought we would be carrying so much of the weight marketing all this shit, and her focus wasn’t going to be the podcast, it was just one amongst 9,000 things she was doing. So it felt like we were getting screwed. So I, at the end, like we were ready to sign it, and at the end I’m like, ‘I’m not interested anymore.’
Portnoy wished Cunningham and Wilson well but delivered a playful parting shot:
I like her, but I’m kind of rooting against it.
Defending teammate Caitlin Clark
Cunningham also addressed her teammate Caitlin Clark, whose arrival in the WNBA has made her the league’s most recognizable face. While many celebrate Clark’s impact, Cunningham criticized those who downplay her significance.
It literally pisses me off when people are like, ‘She’s not the face of the league,'” Cunningham said. “We have a lot of badasses in our league, and hell yeah, I’m all for that, but when people try to argue that she’s not the face of our league or that our league would be where we’re at without her, you’re dumb as shit. You’re literally dumb as f-.
She added that some players resent Clark’s rising profile, recalling past locker room chatter in Phoenix.
Even when I wasn’t on her team, I know the talks that Phoenix had in the locker room, like, ‘No we’re gonna show her what the W really is,'” Cunningham revealed in her podcasts, where she enjoys a lot saying different things regarding a variety of subjects, like she explained before.
She manages her time to be training, continue creating her podcast with West, and engage their audience.
