Dave Portnoy opens up about Angel Reese: I hate how brilliant she is

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, known for his sharp critiques of WNBA star Angel Reese, surprised many this week by praising her for a savvy business move.

After previously calling Reese “classless” and criticizing her on several occasions-especially following her heated rivalry with Caitlin Clark-Portnoy shifted gears to commend Reese‘s trademarking of the term “Mebounds.”

Originally coined as a sarcastic jab at Reese‘s missed layups that often turned into offensive rebounds, “Mebounds” might have remained a mocking label. Instead, Reese and her team turned it into a clever branding opportunity.

The move was further cemented when Reebok announced a signature sneaker colorway titled Angel Reese 1 Mebounds, solidifying the nickname as part of Reese‘s personal brand.

On social media platform X, Portnoy admitted, “I hate (sports sense) Angel Reese. Hate her. That’s how much it pains me to admit how brilliant it was for her team to trademark Mebounds and make it her thing. Brilliant. I hate how brilliant it is.” While still laced with sarcasm, this was a clear acknowledgment of Reese’s sharp business instincts.

Angel Reese: Turning Criticism Into Opportunity

At just 23 years old and in only her second season with the Chicago Sky, Reese has already made waves on and off the court. Her current averages of 14.0 points and 12.6 rebounds per game showcase her growth, but what’s more striking is her jump in assists-from 1.9 last season to 3.8 this year-demonstrating a well-rounded skill set.

After a rocky start to the season, Reese has elevated her game significantly in recent weeks, averaging 16.4 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists on 50% shooting over her last 14 games. This surge has reinforced her status as a top-tier WNBA talent, while her branding acumen has set her apart as a player with a keen understanding of the business side of sports.

The “Mebounds” trademark illustrates Reese‘s ability to take what began as a jab and turn it into a marketing asset-a skill that is increasingly important in the era of athlete-driven branding and social media presence.

Portnoy‘s softened stance is especially notable given his continued support for Reese’s rival Caitlin Clark. His grudging praise highlights the respect Reese commands even among her harshest critics. As the WNBA’s profile continues to rise, Reese‘s blend of on-court excellence and off-court savvy positions her as one of the league’s most compelling figures.

In a sports world where branding can be as impactful as performance, Reese’s “Mebounds” move exemplifies how athletes can seize control of their narratives and turn challenges into opportunities for growth and success.
