Daniel Dubois fires back after Canelo Alvarez’s $500K bet on Oleksandr Usyk

The boxing world is once again crackling with anticipation as Daniel Dubois and Oleksandr Usyk prepare to meet in their high-stakes rematch on July 19 at Wembley Stadium. But amid the expected tension and buildup, an unexpected twist has emerged-courtesy of boxing superstar Canelo Álvarez, who recently placed a $500,000 bet on Usyk to win.

Alvarez revealed his high-stakes gamble in a social media post that included praise for Usyk’s “strong stamina” and “smart” technique. “When I see someone with that kind of focus, I back them,” Canelo wrote, sharing a photo of his wager-placed via betting app 1win-with a potential return of $630,000.

The post quickly went viral and ignited strong reactions across the boxing community.

Daniel Dubois, however, had a cold, sharp response when asked about Canelo’s bet. “It don’t mean s-t to me,” Dubois said bluntly at the final press conference. “He’s gonna lose his money. I’m focused now.” His statement sent a clear message-not only to Usyk, but to Canelo and anyone doubting his resolve.

This rematch follows their controversial first bout in August 2023, when Usyk stopped Dubois in the ninth round. Dubois had landed a contentious body shot that was ruled a low blow, sparking debate over what might have been. Now, with revenge in mind, Dubois is looking to rewrite the script.

A clash of mindsets and momentum

Usyk, 38, has brushed off talk that age might slow him down. Calm and composed at the final presser-rosary beads in hand, head bowed-he remarked, “I respect this young guy. I’m not an old guy-38 is not old. We will see.” His demeanor reflected a veteran who’s been here before: 23-0, two-division undisputed champion, and now on the brink of history as he attempts to claim that status a third time.

Meanwhile, Dubois, fresh off victories over Anthony Joshua and Filip Hrgovic, has momentum and hunger. Dressed in a simple tracksuit and cap, he vowed to “write [his] own script,” telling reporters, “I’m going to win these belts and I’m going to be the man.”

With nearly 90,000 fans expected and a record-setting purse, the rematch promises fireworks. Canelo’s bet may have added intrigue, but for Dubois and Usyk, this isn’t about money-it’s about pride, redemption, and legacy.

Only one man will walk away with all the belts. The question is: will it be Usyk’s poise-or Dubois’ fire-that wins the night?
