Dan Orlovsky speaks up about Tom Brady’s Fox role controversy

Ex-NFL quarterback and current ESPN commentator Dan Orlovsky has fought back against growing rumors that Tom Brady is giving the Las Vegas Raiders an unfair advantage giving his new television contract with Fox.

Brady, a new 2024 Fox Sports lead NFL analyst, also holds a minority interest in the Raiders, formally made in 2024. His recent visit inside the Raiders’ coaches’ booth as a game visitor made noise about whether the legendary quarterback was crossing a line between the responsibilities of his TV work and ownership.

Orlovsky’s defense of Brady

On ESPN’s NFL Live, Orlovsky spoke to the controversy head-on, saying that the sole idea of Brady using his television position to benefit the Raiders was just false:

I think it only affects his ability to call a game. I don’t think it brings integrity into the equation

Dan Orlovsky

The observer clarified that although Brady’s team and player intelligence is unmatched, there is no basis for assuming that he illegitimately is tipping the information to Raiders head coach Pete Carroll or to the team itself.

NFL Rules and league position

According to the NFL, there is not a rule forbidding a minority or majority owner from taking up a coaches’ box during a game. What Brady is not able to do, however, is to attend team practices and production meetings in person at team hotels and facilities, which would create a conflict of interest..

The league has established that Brady is in compliance, but that his exposure in the booth has raised an eyebrow, or two.

The wider public debate

Yet, not everybody share the same view. Analysts like ESPN’s Mike Greenberg were wondering if Brady’s broadcasting Raiders games can be an image issue for the NFL. Fans are also divided, with some claiming Brady as a positive thing for the Raiders, while others view his on-field and broadcast presence as an image issue for the league.

For the time being, the NFL is insisting that Tom Brady’s role as a part-time on-air figure for Fox and minority Raiders owner is not a violation of league policy. But as long as Brady maintains both roles, the scrutiny surrounding him, and whether or not he really can balance his two careers is no going to fade anytime soon.
