Damian Lillard’s surprising return to the Portland Trail Blazers: A shock to the NBA

Damian Lillard’s latest career decision has stunned the NBA world. After being waived by the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this month, the star point guard, who had been heavily linked to several championship-contending teams, made an unexpected move by returning to the Portland Trail Blazers-the team he spent the majority of his career with.

On Thursday, Lillard agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract with the Trail Blazers, a deal that includes a player option for the 2027-28 season and a no-trade clause. This move is a significant twist in Lillard’s career, as many anticipated that he would opt for a team with a clearer shot at winning an NBA title.

One of the main reasons behind Lillard’s decision to return to Portland is his desire to be closer to his family, who still reside in the area.

The 35-year-old point guard is also recovering from a torn Achilles injury that he suffered during the playoffs, which will likely keep him sidelined for the 2025-26 season. This long rehabilitation process may have influenced his choice to return home, providing him the comfort and support of his family during a challenging time.

Lillard spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Trail Blazers before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks ahead of the 2023-24 season. During his time in Portland, Lillard became one of the most beloved and consistent stars in the NBA, averaging 25.1 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game.

However, the Blazers’ recent struggles, including a 36-46 record and failure to make the playoffs in the 2023-24 season, led many to believe Lillard would seek a new home with stronger title aspirations.

A homecoming over title contention

Despite the Blazers’ rebuilding phase, Lillard chose to prioritize his personal life over the pursuit of another championship. The nine-time NBA All-Star had been linked to several title contenders, including the Miami Heat and other high-profile teams.

Most analysts expected him to join a squad with a more immediate chance at winning a ring, especially after Milwaukee waived him.

However, Lillard’s decision reflects his deep ties to Portland and his strong connection to the community. Instead of chasing a championship, he opted to return to a familiar environment and finish his career with the team that drafted him.

Although Lillard still had $113 million left on his contract with the Bucks, the team agreed to spread the remaining payments over five seasons. Lillard’s decision to sign with Portland is a testament to the influence of his family and the city he’s called home for over a decade.

The NBA world will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Lillard’s recovery from his Achilles injury and his return to the court in the coming seasons. Whether this surprising return to Portland will lead to a competitive team remains to be seen, but Lillard is clearly committed to finishing his career on his own terms.
