The Dallas Mavericks selected the next NBA superstar, Cooper Flagg, with the first overall pick in the Draft. The Texans only had a 1.8% chance of being the first to choose after a season that ended in catastrophic fashion following the trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers, with injuries to Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving
The first hadphysical problems in his left abductorthat caused him to miss several games in the final stretch of the regular season, while the 33-year-old point guard suffered one of the worst injuries for a basketball player in early March:anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. Also, the other point guard on the roster,Spencer Dinwiddie, is out of contract and free to sign with any team.
I want Cooper Flagg to play point guard
Irving will not play until the middle of next season and, taking all these factors into account, Jason Kidd will be forced to adjust the lineups to fill the point guard position and this is where the Flagg option comes in. “I want to put him at point guard. I think it’s a versatile position, it allows you to do a lot of different things. We can play very good basketball without positions,” said the Mavericks coach.
The former Duke University player is a very versatile and complete player, he stands out for his ability to read the game perfectly and generate advantages with the ball in his hands, but he has never played in that position. He also has good handling and passing ability, but has not acted as such as a playmaker throughout his career
The playmaker position in the NBA
The positions in modern basketball have changed a lot and an example of this is Luka Doncic. The Slovenian plays as a point guard despite having an unusual height for that position (2 meters). There are other similar examples, such as Cade Cunningham of the Pistons (also over two meters)
Similarly, many teams today do not even play with a point guard in their lineups. The classic playmaker no longer exists in some franchises and this is what the Mavericks want to achieve with Flagg
