After months of anticipation, the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson came and went. Despite Iron Mike’s fans hoping for an explosive knockout and return to form, the 58-year-old showed his age, ceding too much activity to the younger fighter and falling to Paul by unanimous decision.
The fight itself left many fans feeling disturbed. In part, Tyson looked old and slow, putting a damper on an explosive legacy. On the other hand, some believe the fight was rigged. They simply couldn’t believe what they saw. Tyson’s lack of energy and punch volume left many wondering if there was something at play. And it’s not just casual boxing fans; it’s professional athletes as well.
Michael Irvin believes Mike Tyson wasn’t allowed to uppercut Jake Paul
Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin isn’t buying what transpired. He appeared on Colin Cowherd‘s show to discuss it with the host.
I saw death in his eyes, I was scared. That don’t look like nobody coming to play. And I was looking for that patented one in the body, [then] uppercut… We didn’t get it, not a one. I read somebody said, ‘it was in the contract, no uppercut’. Come on guys, why wouldn’t Mike throw an uppercut?
Cowherd wholeheartedly agreed with Irvin, piggybacking on his point by turning back the clock to Tyson in his prime.
“If you watched Tyson’s career, the uppercut was the killshot. And he didn’t throw one [against Paul].”
There are a lot of boxing fans who have the same type of theory. Tyson certainly looked slow and tired easily, so that may be why he didn’t throw a single uppercut. It also costed him to even get close to the more athletic Paul, but there will always be a whiff of controversy regarding this fight.
