The Dallas Cowboys survived a rollercoaster in Week 2, edging the New York Giants 40-37 in an overtime thriller. The win kept Dallas on track early in the season, but it didn’t hide some glaring issues, especially on defense.
That side of the ball is hurting – literally. Several starters missed the Giants game, and one of the most notable absences was linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who continues to rehab from a major knee injury.
Overshown’s path in Dallas has been a tough one. Drafted in the third round in 2023, his rookie campaign ended before it began when he tore his ACL in preseason. He bounced back in 2024 and quickly made his presence felt – 90 tackles, five sacks, a pick-six, and a reputation as one of Dallas’ rising defenders. But fate struck again in Week 14, when Overshown tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL, shutting him down for the rest of the year.
Overshown Sets Thanksgiving Goal
Now, the second-year linebacker says his comeback is moving in the right direction – and he has a date circled.
“I’m getting there,” Overshown told DallasCowboys.com’s Tommy Yarrish.“It’s definitely to a point where we’re getting the last clears from my surgeon, and now it’s just easing me back into playing football. The knee is healthy, I’m moving around fast, strong, now just being smart with the timing. I don’t want to say (Thanksgiving) is the target date, but I feel like I’ll be playing football before Thanksgiving with the team.”
It’s the first encouraging timeline Cowboys fans have heard from Overshown since the injury, and it couldn’t come at a better time. Dallas is navigating life without Micah Parsons, and Overshown’s versatility would be a welcome boost in a linebacker group that’s struggled to find its rhythm.
For now, Damone Clark, Jack Sanborn, and Kenneth Murray Jr. are holding down the fort. But after a shaky showing in Week 2, the unit knows reinforcements can’t arrive soon enough. Overshown’s return – if it lines up with his personal goal – would come right when Dallas is entering the playoff push.
The Cowboys travel to Chicago for a Week 3 matchup against the winless Bears, kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
