Dak Prescott will determine George Pickens’ success or failure with the Cowboys, says Mike Florio

George Pickens is one of the most promising prospects for the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the new NFL season. With an outstanding physique, standing 1.90m tall, weighing 90kg and with a speed of 4.4 seconds in the 40 yards, it is clear why he is one of the main bets for Dallas

One of his main characteristics is the spectacular one-handed receptions, in the style of Odell Beckham Jr., which is even more impressive considering that he has smaller than average hands for a player in his position.

George Pickens stats

In his first three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pickens surpassed 50 receptions and 800 yards in each, figures that are even more valuable when considering the instability at the quarterback position during that time.

In 2023, he led the NFL with an average of 18.1 yards per reception and has an overall average of 16.3 since entering the league in 2022, the highest in that span.

Now, with his arrival to the Dallas Cowboys, Pickens will have the opportunity to play with a solid quarterback such as Dak Prescott. That is why for Mike Florio, an analyst at NBC Sports, this change could be key for the receiver to reach his full potential.

“Pickens has never had a top-level quarterback,” Florio explained. “He arrived in Pittsburgh just after Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, and since then he has worked with Kenny Pickett, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph. None of them represent what Prescott can offer.”

It is clear that although Prescott has received criticism for his performance in the playoffs, few doubt his quality as a starting passer in the regular season, so his presence could offer Pickens the stability he never had in Pittsburgh.

The curse of the receivers who leave the Steelers

Florio also referred to a common pattern among outgoing Steelers receivers: after leaving the team, they rarely manage to improve their performance at other franchises. However, he believes Pickens could buck that trend.

“He shown elite skills. And with a quarterback like Dak, plus the support of CeeDee Lamb on the other side, Pickens could benefit from single coverage for much of the season,” the analyst concluded.

Prescott, for his part, has already expressed his enthusiasm upon his arrival in Dallas. “I’m more excited than ever to play with him,” he said recently, so Cowboys fans are looking forward to a promising 2025 season.
