Dak Prescott and the big doubts about his return: ‘He’s at an advanced stage of his career…’

Dak Prescott has been told to make sure he stays at his peak performance over an entire season or risk the Dallas Cowboys potentially exploring new quarterback options as the 31-year-old returns from injury.

A Week 9 issue sustained during a loss to the Atlanta Falcons made sure the quarterback’s 2024/25 NFL season was brought to an early close, as questions surrounding his fitness were raised once again.

Despite showcasing high levels of talent, such as the 4516 passing yards and 36 touchdowns of the 2023/24 campaign, he has always faced scrutiny over whether he can stay fit for an entire year – as well as carry that momentum into the NFL Playoffs.

Now an analyst named Greg Cosell has addressed the critical factors influencing Prescott‘s successful return, challenging him to play a full season; will be the central attention for both the quarterback and the Cowboys organization.

“The focus has to be, can he play a full season?” Cosell told the Ross Tucker Football Podcast, as the history of leg injuries raises legitimate concerns ahead of the summer training camp at Dallas.

He also pointed to a weakness in the veteran’s game, sending a warning that if it isn’t addressed and locked down then he may not be able to look like the player who won a $240m contract from Jerry Jones.

“At this point in his career,” Cosell continued. “Dak Prescott is pretty much a pure pocket quarterback.

“And without a left tackle that can pass protect one on one….”

Dak Prescott: Well on the path to recovery

Following the injury, Prescott underwent surgery on November 13, initiating a rigorous rehabilitation process, and now nearly seven months into recovery, he has recently resumed team activities at the AT&T Stadium.

That including voluntary workouts in May, an encouraging sign, as he now provides an update on his condition.

“Pretty much can do it all,” Prescott told reporters. “Feel good. Yeah, I think I’m just not cleared for contact, which we’ve got a while for that anyways.

“Yeah, I’m out there in the team activities. Feel good. Just trying to stay that way. Yeah, feeling great.”

The Cowboys are eager to see him return to full strength as they prepare for a new season under head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who was promoted after the team’s disappointing 7-10 finish and subsequent firing of Mike McCarthy after slumping behind the Washington Commanders in the NFC East.

Prescott‘s ongoing participation in OTAs and reported steady progress have raised hopes that he will be fully healthy in time for the critical Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Kick Off Game on September 5, as Dallas take on the defending champions.
