Dak Prescott 2.0? Cowboys QB is coming for Mahomes, Hurts, and Allen with a vengeance

There was a time when Dak Prescott was feared as a true dual-threat quarterback. Early in his career, the Dallas Cowboys signal-caller was known for both his arm strength and his ability to make plays with his legs. But injuries put that explosive play style on pause-until now.

Cowboys beat writer Clarence E. Hill recalled that during Prescott’s rookie season, he logged 57 carries for 282 yards. In 2017, he again rushed 57 times, this time for 357 yards. In 2018, that number rose to 75 carries for 305 yards. In each of those seasons, he scored six rushing touchdowns.

However, a season-ending injury in 2020 brought that mobility to a halt. The decline has been clear in his rushing stats: 146 yards in 2021, 182 in 2022, 242 in 2023, and just 54 yards through eight games in 2024. But that dry spell may be over soon-and the NFL is on alert.

Running toward the Super Bowl

On the June 20 episode of DLLS Sports, Hill Jr. revealed, “Dak has been working on his speed; he’s working on running.” Hill added, “He says he doesn’t think running is why he got hurt, ’cause he runs hard in practice. He’s been working on those things.”

Prescott himself had previously emphasized that running played a major role in his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered in 2024. “I’ve been running more-obviously you’ve got to when you’re rehabbing a hamstring,” he said.

Now with his rehab nearly complete, Prescott’s sights are set on the one achievement that has eluded him: a Super Bowl ring. “I want to win a championship. The legacy and the things, and whatever comes after I finish playing, will take care of itself,” the Cowboys star declared.

Prescott always comes back stronger

History suggests that Prescott isn’t just making a comeback-he’s about to level up. Though his rushing numbers have taken a hit since 2020, his passing in 2021 soared: 410 completions on 596 attempts for 4,449 yards, 37 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions.

If that pattern of post-injury growth continues-and now with a renewed focus on his mobility-the NFL’s elite quarterbacks might need to look over their shoulders. Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, and Josh Allen could soon be sharing the spotlight with a revitalized Dak Prescott.
