Shedeur Sanders found himself on the wrong end of a prank during night two of the 2025 NFL Draft as a joker got hold of his number and pretended to be a general manager, giving him false hope of being picked.
The former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback and son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, experienced the disheartening moment during a live Twitch stream from his family’s draft watch party in Texas, adding public embarrassment to an already tense evening.
Sanders, once projected as a high-round selection, had already been passed over in the First Round on Thursday, April 24 and as the Second Round began on Friday night, anticipation built among his family and fans watching the stream.
People were sure that would be the night he was picked but that anticipation eventually turned into ash in his mouth as he found himself left without an NFL team once again as his future hangs on the ropes.
However, there was a brief moment of what appeared to be relief and elation when Sanders answered a call from an unknown number; but it was all a mirage as a prankster turned him into a cruel joke.
Though the stream was suffered connection issues, it quicky became evident the conversation wasn’t legitimate and after the caller hung up, Sanders and those around him tried to make sense of what had happened.
Sanders reacted with irritation over how the caller had obtained his private number to stage the performance in the first place, in which the joker had said, “You gotta wait a little longer.”
Sanders shrugs off 2025 NFL Draft night two woes
Despite expectations, the second round ended without Sanders being selected. Many had predicted the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, or Pittsburgh Steelers might take a chance on the dual-threat quarterback. However, those hopes faded quickly.
The Browns instead selected a linebacker and running back whilst New Orleans passed on Sanders in favor of Louisville’s quarterback, Tyler Shough. The Steelers, lacking a second-round pick, went with a running back in Round 3.
Even as Sanders remained the subject of heavy speculation on draft broadcasts and social media, he maintained a composed demeanor and nonchalant attitude despite the tough night.
“Thank you GOD for EVERYTHING,” Sanders posted to X.com, formerly Twitter, after previously vowing the snubs would only prove to be fuel for his motivation to succeed in the NFL.
Sanders was also snubbed for more quarterbacks too as Alabama’s Jalen Milroe was taken by the Seattle Seahawks and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel by the Browns.
For Shedeur, the NFL Draft now serves as one more obstacle to overcome as he aims to make it to the professional football scene, with a return to college football permanently off the table.
