Cowboys rookies stand united as Jaydon Blue, teammates shut down lazy label from ex-coach

The Dallas Cowboys aren’t having it when it comes to outside noise targeting rookie running back Jaydon Blue.

After former Cowboys assistant Glenn “Stretch” Smith made headlines with unverified claims about Blue‘s work ethic during an appearance on the Locked On Cowboys podcast, the response from inside the building was swift, clear, and united.

Smith, who hasn’t coached for the Cowboys in years, joined host Marcus Mosher on Friday to say that some inside the organization were allegedly concerned with Blue‘s offseason commitment.

Specifically, he claimed that Blue had skipped workouts and was being viewed as “borderline lazy” by unnamed coaches.

There was just one problem with that narrative: it contradicted everything that has been publicly reported from inside The Star and flew in the face of what those close to Blue, including his former college coach, have consistently said.

Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian, who coached Blue during his time at UT, offered a vastly different assessment when asked about the rookie.

“A guy that comes to work every day, really loves football, and will be a great teammate,” Sarkisian said of Blue.

Jaydon Blue fires back, and teammates rally behind him

Blue didn’t let Smith’s accusation slide. The rookie responded directly to the speculation on social media, laughing off the comments and calling out the platform for chasing clicks at his expense.

“Fake article using my name for clout,” he wrote, brushing off the segment with visible confidence.

But it wasn’t just Blue defending himself. Cowboys safety Juanyeh Thomas jumped to his teammate’s defense with a pointed post of his own, using the hashtag #GoofTroops and blasting the podcast segment.

“Dem ‘ex coaches’ lame as hell… Lil bra ain’t had 1 issue on or off the field … People just lie for free… I hope they got the views on the show they wanted though,” Thomas wrote.

It’s exactly the kind of response that current Cowboys leadership has been working to cultivate under offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who has emphasized building a culture of family and trust.

When unsubstantiated chatter comes from outside the locker room, Dallas players aren’t shy about shutting it down.

The Cowboys are leaning into a team-first identity, especially with a young core trying to establish itself.

With Tony Pollard gone, Blue has a real opportunity to contribute early, and those inside the building appear to have complete faith in his preparation and approach.
