Cowboys’ Jadeveon Clowney loses masive bonus due to contract clause

Contract language must be precise, or unexpected consequences can arise. Dallas Cowboys defensive end Jadeveon Clowney learned this the hard way, losing a massive end-of-season bonus due to the wording of his deal.

The 2025 NFL season did not unfold as the Cowboys had hoped. Despite having Dak Prescott healthy for the first time in years, the team missed the playoffs.

The defense, led by Matt Eberflus, was largely to blame. Statistically, the unit ranked among the worst in the league.

Clowney, however, was a rare bright spot. The veteran defensive end delivered consistent production, yet the Cowboys will not be paying him a bonus many believe he earned.

Why did Clowney miss out on $750,000?

Signed to bolster Dallas’ pass rush, Clowney lived up to expectations. In 13 games, he recorded 38 tackles (21 solo) and 8.5 sacks.

That sack total should have triggered a $750,000 bonus. However, according to Spotrac, Clowney’s contract stipulated performance incentives tied to postseason qualification.

The deal included $250,000 for six sacks, $750,000 for eight sacks, and $1.5 million for ten sacks-but only if the Cowboys reached the playoffs.

The only exception was a 12-sack threshold, which would have guaranteed a $1 million payout regardless of team success. Clowney fell 3.5 sacks short.

What’s next for Jadeveon Clowney?

Clowney joined Dallas on a one-year, $3.5 million contract that expired Sunday after the Cowboys’ 34-17 loss to the New York Giants.

Neither side has publicly discussed an extension, though insiders suggest mutual interest in a new deal. If negotiations stall, Clowney’s production should attract attention from other teams. His future will likely be decided by March, when free agency begins.
