Cowboys Hit Hard: Dak Prescott’s guard breaks a bone in his neck and will be out for several months

The second week of training camp began with a major setback for quarterback Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys. With hopes of returning to the Super Bowl after a 30-year drought, the team can hardly afford such blows – yet they’ve lost a key piece of their offensive line: guard Rob Jones.

The Cowboys’ line has been one of the NFL’s most inconsistent units in recent seasons, surrendering 30 sacks in 2021, 20 in 2022, 39 in 2023, and 21 last year. That’s why the front office signed Jones from the Miami Dolphins during the offseason, aiming to fortify protection for Prescott.

Jones, a five-season veteran with 30 career starts – including 17 in 2024 – joined Dallas on a one-year, $3.75 million deal. He was expected to serve as a plug-in starter while rookie Tyler Booker, the 12th overall pick in the 2025 draft, developed into the role.

Rob Jones’ injury sends shockwaves through Cowboys camp

Team sources reported insiders Adam Schefter and Todd Archer that Jones suffered a potentially career-ending injury. “Cowboys guard Rob Jones, who had been working with the starters early in camp, broke a bone in his neck during Sunday’s practice,” they revealed.

On the Cowboys’ website, Jones recounted, “It happened right at the first [rep].” Though he finished practice and even took a few snaps alongside Booker, his season ended before he officially played a single down.

No official timeline has been given, but Jones stated, “They’re saying it’ll be about two to three months.” He appeared with a neck brace during his media availability, and despite initial fears, the injury might be less severe than first believed.

Next moves for coach Schottenheimer

Jones’ injury is a serious blow to Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer’s depth chart. While Booker was slated to take over eventually, he may now be thrust into the starting role by Week 1 – long before expected.

Other potential replacements include Saahdiq Charles, Brook Hoffman, and T.J. Bass – all with starting experience. As the coaching staff weighs its options, fans are left hoping for Rob Jones’ swift and full recovery.
