Cowboys and Steelers confirm trade for wide receiver that CeeDee Lamb has warned about

The Dallas Cowboys have finalized a blockbuster trade to acquire wide receiver George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers. This move comes amidst growing tensions between Pickens and the Steelers organization, as well as cryptic social media activity from Cowboys star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Pickens, 24, has been a standout performer since entering the NFL, recording at least 800 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons, including 900 yards on 59 receptions in 2024. However, his tenure in Pittsburgh has been marred by off-field issues, including reported punctuality problems and a strained relationship with head coach Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers’ recent acquisition of DK Metcalf, who signed a five-year, $150 million extension, further complicated Pickens’ future with the team.

Speculation about Pickens’ departure intensified after he unfollowed the Steelers on social media during the 2025 NFL Draft. Simultaneously, CeeDee Lamb posted a cryptic message, fueling rumors of the Cowboys’ interest in bolstering their receiving corps.

Dallas have not drafted a wide receiver in 2025 and with Brandin Cooks departing in the offseason, has been actively seeking a reliable No. 2 wideout to support Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott.

The Dallas Cowboys made the news official in a post on X on Wednesday: “We’ve agreed to terms to acquire WR George Pickens and a 2026 6th-round pick from the Steelers in exchange for a 2026 3rd-round pick and a 2027 5th-round pick.”

A new dynamic duo in Dallas

The addition of Pickens is poised to create a formidable receiving duo alongside Lamb. While the specifics of the trade compensation remain undisclosed, the move signifies the Cowboys’ commitment to enhancing their offensive arsenal. Under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas aims to rebound from their 7-10 finish last season.

For the Steelers, trading Pickens allows them to reallocate resources and focus on building for the future. With Metcalf secured as their primary receiver, Pittsburgh can now address other areas of need, potentially targeting the quarterback position in the upcoming drafts. Head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways with a talented player like Pickens but emphasized the importance of looking toward the future.

As the NFL landscape continues to evolve during trading season, this move shows that the Cowboys are aiming to right the wrongs of their disastrous campaign last time out.
