Cowboys and Micah Parsons negotiations go backward: No agreement in sight

Contract discussions between the Dallas Cowboys and linebacker Micah Parsons have reportedly deteriorated, with both parties now further apart than they were earlier this year.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, as of late July and early August, negotiations have regressed rather than progressed.

Schefter, referencing information from Yahoo Sports’ Leocciano Callao, stated that communication between Parsons and the Cowboys has significantly diminished.

“The two sides have gone backwards, not forwards,” he said, noting that the negotiation has stalled and is no longer active.

Currently, there appears to be minimal dialogue regarding a new contract agreement.

Dallas Cowboys fans are fearing the worst

While the situation could change in the near future, potentially even before the regular season begins, historical precedents suggest the Cowboys often finalize deals late in the offseason or during the season itself, as seen in past negotiations with players such as CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott.

At present, the Cowboys reportedly have a contract offer on the table that is unlikely to be revised.

Parsons faces the choice of accepting the offer or playing under the terms of his fifth-year option, valued at approximately $24 million for the 2025 season.

Discussions regarding a long-term extension would likely resume after the season concludes.

Fans are beginning to fear that Parsons may force a trade before the 2025 season starts, which would leave them without one of their best defensive players, furthermore it could strengthen a rival.

Parsons‘ fitness has also been a concern in Dallas. They have seen him miss a lot of games and don’t want to sign him to a huge contract only for him then to prove unworthy of the fiscal commitment they made to him.

Given the current state of negotiations, it is probable that a new contract between Parsons and the Cowboys will not be reached before 2026.

This delay may have implications for both the player’s earnings and the team’s salary cap management as the upcoming season approaches.

There is also the small matter of the fact Dallas have paid players in the recent past and not received a huge return on their investment.

Despite reaching the playoffs comfortably in recent years, the team has yet to make any sort of positive mark after January.

The ongoing impasse leaves both parties in a state of uncertainty as they prepare for the 2025 NFL campaign, with a resolution possibly pending until the final moments of the season.
