Could Zion Williamson be on his way out of New Orleans? Pelicans stint may be nearing its end

Since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2019, Zion Williamson‘s career in New Orleans has been defined by flashes of brilliance and prolonged absences.

Now, after a season marred by injuries, legal distractions, and a record-setting losing campaign, speculation is mounting that the two-time All-Star may soon be seeking a new home.

When Joe Dumars took over as the Pelicans‘ executive vice president of basketball operations, expectations of a roster reboot heightened. In June, Dumars offered a firm vote of confidence in Williamson‘s role moving forward:

“I’ve had some real honest conversations with him, ” Dumars said at the time. “We’re going to go forward with Zion. He’s going to continue to be a focal point here as we go forward.”

The weight of availability

Availability, or the lack thereof, has become Zion‘s defining narrative. This past season, he played just 30 games, sidelined by injuries and a suspension for missing a team flight.

After returning, he delivered memorable performances, including two triple-doubles. Yet overall, his absence was too frequent, raising concerns about long-term durability.

Executive insiders suggest that his trade value is at a low, a reflection of widespread skepticism across the league, while others argue that an unexpected blockbuster offer might force the Pelicans to reconsider.

Looking ahead: patience or pivot?

On one hand, Dumars‘ public backing and the team’s decision to feature Zion at the NBA Draft Lottery signal an intent to give him another chance at being the face of the franchise.

Yet, pessimism lingers. Multiple sources indicate that winning franchises are wary of trading meaningful assets for a player whose availability remains in serious doubt.

Complicating matters further, Zion now has years left on his contract, but much of it isn’t guaranteed unless he meets performance conditions tied to game appearances and weight benchmarks.

Potential trade partners for Zion

Several teams are quietly eyeing Zion Williamson, drawn in by his extraordinary upside when healthy.

The intrigue surrounding a return to New York hasn’t faded. Reports suggest the Knicks remain interested, driven by the marketability of a highlight-ready star like Zion. Meanwhile, the Nets, with salary cap flexibility and a depleted roster, could make a low-risk move to bet on Zion‘s ceiling.

The Detroit Pistons see Zion as the ideal co-star for Cade Cunningham, pairing a dynamic inside presence with an electrifying backcourt.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks and others point to Golden State as a natural fit. Zion‘s explosiveness and the Warriors‘ need for a dominant interior force could align, though health remains the major caveat.

As some insiders see it, the Bucks could view a pairing of Zion with Giannis Antetokounmpo as the final push toward contention, if the latter’s future remains uncertain.
