Could Paxton DeLaurent be Mahomes’ unexpected insurance plan?

The Kansas City Chiefs, led by superstar Patrick Mahomes, are offering a unique opportunity to a rising quarterback prospect. Southeast Missouri’sPaxton DeLaurent has been invited to the team’s rookie minicamp following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft. Although Mahomes and new backup Gardner Minshew have already secured the top two spots on the depth chart, DeLaurent will aim to carve out a role as a potential third-string option.

Currently, Bailey Zappe and Chris Oladokun are battling for the QB3 position. Zappe, with a career touchdown-to-interception ratio of 12-14, brings some NFL experience, while Oladokun has thrown just one pass in regular-season action. DeLaurent now enters the mix with an opportunity to challenge both and prove he belongs.

DeLaurent’s strong college numbers

Paxton DeLaurent, a Camdenton native, made waves during his time at Southeast Missouri. In his final collegiate season, he threw for an impressive 4,073 yards and 33 touchdowns, leading the Ohio Valley Conference in both categories. His production, combined with his physical attributes, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 230 pounds, gives him the kind of frame NFL teams typically look for at the position.

Despite coming from a smaller program, DeLaurent’s combination of size, arm strength, and production makes him an intriguing option for Kansas City as they look to bolster their quarterback room ahead of the preseason.

A long shot with something to prove

For now, DeLaurent’s role may simply be to serve as an additional arm for rookie minicamp. However, he is determined to make the most of his opportunity. If he impresses coaches with his poise, decision-making, and physical tools, he could earn a longer look when the team assembles for training camp later this summer.

The Chiefs are known for developing talent, and while DeLaurent faces steep competition, the door remains open for him to make an unexpected climb. Whether he sticks around or simply gains valuable NFL experience, DeLaurent’s journey is one to watch as the offseason unfolds.
