Could Nikola Jokic retire early? Nuggets star’s indifference to NBA fame fuels speculation

Nikola Jokic is a three-time NBA MVP, a Finals MVP, and a champion. By any measure, he’s established himself as one of the defining talents of his generation-and the $270 million contract he signed with the Denver Nuggets in 2022 underscores just how valuable he is to the franchise.

But despite all the accolades and riches, Jokic might just be the NBA’s least predictable superstar when it comes to his long-term plans.

Recently, former Nuggets teammate DeMarcus Cousins offered insight into Jokic‘s unconventional mindset.

Speaking on the Straight Game Podcast, Cousins recounted a locker room conversation where Jokic confessed he might walk away from basketball before his record-setting contract is even up.

“I don’t remember who had signed an extension, but I’m like, ‘Yours is going to be crazy!'” Cousins recalled. “He was like, ‘You know, Cuz, I honestly think I might retire before this contract.'”

The comment stunned Cousins, who told him, “Man, you out your motherf***ing mind… Sign the contract and just get fat at worst. Don’t pass up on the $300 million.”

Jokic’s motivation remains a mystery

Jokic‘s casual attitude toward the NBA isn’t just talk. Fans have long noticed his reluctance to embrace the spotlight. While most stars chase brand deals and legacy, Jokic is more likely to be found at a horse track in Serbia than in a commercial shoot or postgame media scrum.

It’s a mindset that both endears him to fans and worries those hoping to see a long career. Jokic has made it clear he values his happiness and family above basketball, and it’s that personal balance-not the pressure to build a dynasty-that drives his decisions.

Even after the Nuggets‘ championship run, Jokic‘s postgame comments about “wanting to go home” went viral. His interests outside of basketball remain a priority, and unlike most MVPs, he rarely talks about cementing his legacy or chasing individual records.

What would Jokic’s early retirement mean?

If Jokic were to step away before his contract ends, it would send shockwaves through the league. Denver’s title hopes are built around their unselfish, uniquely skilled center. For now, though, he remains the centerpiece of the Nuggets and one of the faces of the NBA.

But as long as Jokic keeps his future open-ended-and keeps reminding people that life exists beyond basketball-the speculation about early retirement will only grow louder.

For now, all Denver and NBA fans can do is enjoy Jokic‘s brilliance and hope he decides to keep playing for as long as he finds joy in the game. Because with Nikola Jokic, nothing is ever guaranteed.
