It is not surprising that the Dallas Cowboys have receiver problems. And while they have an extraordinary player who should be among the top five at his position, CeeDee Lamb, outside of him there is not much else to offer.
Former No. 2 Brandin Cooks left via free agency, leaving behind an inexperienced group of receivers hoping to prove their worth during the offseason. However, some have already had their chance and have not shown enough to keep the team happy heading into 2025.
It is not clear what the Cowboys’ strategy is
Free agency has come and gone and there are still options for veterans, or they could turn to the NFL Draft to find a talented rookie to add to the roster. Those are the two most plausible options for the Cowboys.
But with their reputation for being stingy, they are sure to be desperately looking for an alternative to salvage their worth. Considering the abundance of talent available in the draft and at the top of the free agent lists, this option may be unlikely.
But nothing should ever be ruled out when it comes to the Cowboys and their roster building. With that in mind, could Dallas have Hunter Renfrow among its candidates?
The veteran receiver made his mark with the Las Vegas Raiders in his first three years in the NFL, totaling 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns in the final of those three seasons.
But the next two were far from the excellence he had shown, failing to reach 350 yards in either.
Renfrow’s experience would help Prescott
Renfrow, 29, has spoken with the Raiders and Carolina Panthers, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. He is also open to meeting with more teams.
When analyzing his merits from his early years, there is a clear vision of where Renfrow could make an impact. His versatility in space and ability in short-yardage situations bears similarities to Cole Beasley and Randall Cobb, two players with whom Dak Prescott has previously played.
There are multiple obstacles for Renfrow to fit in Dallas. First of all, the Cowboys have a full roster of receivers. After a year out of the game, this does not bode well for his chances of moving up the roster.
However, the most obvious thing is that Renfrow still holds no appeal for the Cowboys and, frankly, Dallas has better options to explore if they want another receiver. Even considering the situation from an unclear perspective, it’s hard to imagine the Cowboys going that far.
